The Honorable Eugene Edw. J. Maier, the founding President of the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing (SJHSON), is a native Philadelphian, who attended the parochial schools of Philadelphia, and earned both a B.S. from Temple University and a Juris Doctor Degree from Temple University School of Law. While practicing Law, he served as City Commissioner of Philadelphia from 1973 until 1981, when he was elected a Judge on the Court of Common Pleas. During his twenty-six years on the Court he taught at Temple University, conducted continuing legal education courses for lawyers, served on and chaired the boards of many civic, social, medical and legal organizations. He has chaired the Board of Saint Joseph’s Hospital (SJH) for twelve years, and is a member and Secretary of the North Philadelphia Health System Board, the parent corporation of SJH, SJHSON and Girard Medical Center, for almost twenty years.

Presidents Welcome
As chairman of the Board of SJH, and President of SJHSON, it is my pleasure to welcome students to the SJHSON. We are proud to preserve and continue the mission of the St Joseph’s Hospital school of nursing which provided this City with professional registered nurses from 1893 through 1978. That tradition resumed in 2006 when the SJHSON was re-established. Twenty students graduated in 2007, and the second class of 56 students entered that year. With the successful completion of the one year curriculum, which is both unique and intensive, a student receives a diploma and is then qualified to take for the national licensing examination to become a Registered Nurse. The SJHSON has also arranged for successful students to continue their education and receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at either Drexel University or Walden University. SJHSON graduates who enroll at either of these colleges receive course credit for their work at the SJHSON.
